Racers to pay tenfold damage to Panjab varsity
Authorities have decided to impose a fine ten times the cost that the varsity would incur in repairing the damage caused by the two accelerator-happy students from the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) - Amiteshwer and girl student Gurvir - after suspending them from the department till further notice. An estimated damage worth Rs. 4,000 has been caused to the property. Each of them will be fined 10 times the cost the university will incur on repair work.
Amiteshwer and Gurvir were allegedly racing their vechicles on the campus and Gurvi's car had landed into the fountain.
The dean student welfare (DSW) confirmed the development. A committee comprising Prof dean student welfare (Women), Kalpana K Mahajan; Dr Yog Raj, Dinesh Kumar and Dr Nandita had been constituted to look into the incident.
Varsity authorities have also started registering the details of vehicles (two-wheelers and four-wheelers) belonging to the faculty and other staff, getting data from the chairpersons/directors and the registrar's office so that parking spaces can be designated for different departments. These designated parking's would be allotted after the executive engineer (Ex-En) furnishes detail regarding available spaces. Also, if the vehicles would not be parked at the designated places, the Ex-En would get them lifted and vehicles would be released only after the payment of a fine.
The varsity has written to the UT traffic police, asking them to challan students on campus for over-speeding and for driving without helmets. A proposal to start a free shuttle bus service between 7am and 10pm is being looked into. The committee has recommended buses must be made available every 15 minutes.
Also, authorities have decided to approach the Chandigarh administration to request for a direct bus services from Mohali and Panchkula to the university in the morning and evening.
The committee has also proposed closing the entry of the parking from the side of arts block-4, and opening an entry from the side of the library.
