Scores of people, including neighbours of the brutalised five-year-old girl child and activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), gathered outside east Delhi’s Swami Dayanand Hospital to demand justice for her on Friday. Decrying alleged laxity and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, protesters raised slogans against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Delhi Police.
East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, health minister AK Walia and family welfare and education minister Kiran Walia were among several politicians who were heckled by
the angry people.

While some clashed with the local police — triggering a violent reprisal from an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) who was later suspended — the health minister was assaulted by a female protestor after he and Sandeep entered the hospital from a rear entry to meet the victim and her family.

“The victim is critical and is in a shabby municipality hospital. Why cannot the government and police shift her to a better hospital?” AAP leader Manish Sisodia demanded.

“The people here are average Delhiites who are demanding justice for a grave wrong. We will continue this fight and do all we can for her,” Sisodia added.
ACP Khajuri Khas Bani Singh Ahlawat was suspended for slapping a 17-year-old demonstrator, later identified as Beenu Rawat, a class 12 student.

“We regret this unfortunate act and the ACP has been placed under suspension,” said Rajan Bhagat, additional DCP and spokesperson, Delhi Police. “A departmental inquiry has been ordered. Such acts cannot and will not be tolerated.”
