Former Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf got a breather on Monday as the country's caretaker government told the Supreme Court that it would not take any action against the former military ruler as it was not part of its mandate.

In its reply delivered to the court, the government stated that its mandate was "first and foremost to carry free and fair elections and then to provide security to the candidates standing for elections."

In response to the court's request for an opinion, the caretaker government said that it will abstain from giving any independent statement concerning Musharraf's ongoing trial under Article 6 of the Constitution.
