A 19-year-old girl succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday after she set herself on fire at her Nalasopara residence on April 16. The victim's uncle Mohammad Sultan alias Raja, 27, who had earlier drugged and raped her while her parents were away, had threatened to circulate an obscene video clip upon learning that he had impregnated her, police say.

Police are now looking for the accused who is on the run.

On February 14 this year, while the victim's parents and siblings were away, Sultan visited her residence at Don Lane in Nalasopara (East). He offered her a cold drink which he had allegedly spiked with a drug. The victim consumed the drink, she lost her consciousness after which Sultan allegedly raped her.

On April 15, after realising that she was pregnant, she told her mother about Sultan's visit on February 14. When the victim and her mother went to Sultan's residence, he allegedly slapped the duo and asked them to leave. The following day, on April 16, Sultan told her that he had made an obscene clip of hers and that he would circulate it if she told anyone of the incident.

"After they spoke, while the victim went to the bathroom, poured kerosene and set herself on fire. As the fire engulfed her, she got scared and ran to the living room where her mother draped her with a blanket and took her to Bhagwati hospital," said BR Hangirge, assistant inspector, Nalasopara police.

On April 17, the victim was moved to Nair hospital where she succumbed to her 80% burns.
