The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided to go for LED lamps to illuminate major roads of the city. In the first phase, these lights will be installed in zone V that includes Alambagh, Singar Nagar, Airport, Sarojini Nagar, Cantonment Road, Airport road, Krishna Nagar and Amausi. “The state government has given the nod to replace all the streetlights with LED lights,” said PK Srivastava, additional municipal commissioner.

The LED streetlight project is aimed at conservation of energy and improving illumination on main roads. In a power-starved state like Uttar Pradesh, streetlights consume 500 mw of power per day. If all the normal streetlights are replaced with LED lamps, power consumption by streetlights will come to just half. This will result in a saving of R1,250 crore, which is equivalent to setting up a new 250-mw powerhouse.
