After taking care of top seed Yuki Bhambri in the quarters, Vijayant Malik toiled hard but emerged victorious after 116 minutes against VM Ranjeet to reach the final of the $15000 ITF Futures event in Chandigarh on Friday.
Playing at the CLTA Stadium, a venue the 23-year-old calls home,
the seventh seed beat Ranjeet 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(3). The former CHART trainee will now take on fifth seed Saketh Myneni in the final, in the hope of claiming his second Futures title. Malik had won his first in Vietnam last year.
He will be seen in action in Rohtak next week before he leaves for a Challenger in Uzbekistan.
New Delhi: He might have been the flag-bearer of Indian table tennis but lack of form in the last two years hasn’t helped his cause, and now Achantha Sharath Kamal is keen to give his 100 per cent in the Commwealth Championships, starting here on Sunday.
“There has been a slump in my form in the last two years. I have not been at my best. But I am confident that I will recover. These (Commonwealth) championship could be the platform,” says Sharath Kamal, the world No. 69.
Meanwhile, no paddlers from Pakistan will take part in the tournament because the Indian authorities have not granted them visas.
Athens (USA): Arjun Atwal continued to struggle for form as he managed just one birdie against five bogeys in a card of four-over 75 in the first round of the $600,000 Stadion Classic here. That card put him in danger of missing yet another cut. Atwal, tied 129th, is having problems with his form this season and has missed cut in two of the four starts with a best of 45th.
Sindhu makes final
New Delhi: Top seed P V Sindhu stormed into the final of the women's singles event of the Malaysia Grand Prix Gold tournament with a straight-game win over third seed Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.
The 17-year-old, who made the semifinals of the India Open Super Series here last month, needed just 33 minutes to win 21-17, 21-11 in the semifinals. In the final, she will take on Juan Gu of Singapore.
However in the men's singles, 11th seed R M V Gurusaidutt's campaign ended in the quarterfinals as he conceded his match against Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin of Malaysia.
New Delhi: Digvijay Rawat and Chetan Sharma helped FCI beat Air India by three wickets in DDCA league. In other games, Collage Group beat Delhi Cricket Club while Gush defeated Rajnigandha.
In OSP memorial cricket, NK Chand Khanna beat Telefunken by three wickets to enter the semis.
