A newborn whale shark pup was recently freed by fishermen in Gujarat after being found caught in a fishing net, indicating that the world’s largest fish may be breeding in the area, according to a media statement issued by Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) on Monday.

The release was reported to the Whale Shark Conservation Project team by a local fisherman from Sutrapada, it said.

The project, a joint venture of the Gujarat Forest Department, WTI and Tata Chemicals (LTD) has been carrying out research on the species along the Gujarat coast since 2008.
