Debjani Mukherjee, the closest aide of Saradha boss Sudipta Sen, was sacked as director a year ago as she questioned the way the company collected funds, her lawyer said at a press meet on Friday.
“Mukherjee was the director of 40 companies of the Saradha Group. But she ceased to be the
director of 35 companies last year. Till date, she is the director of five media enterprises only,” said Anirban Guha Thakurta, Mukherjee’s lawyer.
He said that Mukherjee revealed this status to her lawyers on May 8, just 24 hours before the hearing at the Bidhannagar court.
Guha Thakurta read out a two-and-a-half page statement given by Mukherjee to the media.
In her written statement, Mukherjee claimed that she “was used as a tool as she started raising her voice’ about the controversial functioning of the company vis-a-vis its accumulation of funds.
“When I found my boss running the business in a way which is absolutely against my principles, I started raising my voice against him. He did not consider my dedication towards the company and sacked me from the post of director,” the statement reads.
Citing two (flight) e-tickets, Mukherjee’s lawyer also tried to prove that his client had attempted to return to Kolkata when Sen was on the run.
“On April 20 and 22, from Chandigarh and New Delhi respectively, Mukherjee tried to come back to Kolkata. But her attempts failed. However, for the sake of the investigation, we cant divulge right now why she couldn’t return to her hometown,” Guha Thakurta added.
In her statement, Mukherjee said that she used to get a salary of Rs. 80,000 per month from Saradha Realty, the company she joined in 2008 after completing her Masters in English. It also said she was not being paid since November 2012, when the company started passing through troubled times.
However, when asked why she didn’t inform the police after not being paid for several months and getting an idea of the company’s illegal means of collecting money, Mukherjee’s lawyer said, “She was called by her boss for a board meeting when she left Kolkata and joined him directly in New Delhi.
She couldn’t say no to him as Sen was the employer who provided bread and butter to her.”
Dismissing the rumours of Mukherjee being romantically linked with her boss, her statement said, “Please consider that I never had any relations with (Mr) Sudipta Sen other than that of a sincere trustworthy employee. I never shared any room with Sen but owing to my bad luck people are gossiping about my chastity. People are trying to tarnish my image which is completely unjustifiable.”
On Thursday, the officers of Bidhannagar Police summoned a former Reserve Bank employee who during his service with the bank gave undue facilities to Sudipta Sen. According to the cops, this person was attached to a nonbanking finance corporation. “During his tenure, he gave Sen some undue facilities,” said a sleuth.
