The army on Saturday said it repelled a major infiltration bid by militants to sneak into Kashmir’s Machil sector but a junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed and a soldier seriously injured while attempting to push back the militants into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The contact between the army and the militants took place around 2:38am on Saturday in Kupwara’s Machil sector, more than 100km north of Srinagar.

“Four to five heavily armed militants came close to the border fencing in Machil sector. They were intercepted and challenged,” army spokesman lieutenant colonel Ankur Vashist told HT.

The militants fled but left their stores behind. “The infiltration bid was successfully foiled. All the militants went back into PoK,” said Vashist.

Preliminary reports suggest that the infiltrating militants tried to attack Dingeri Post on the Line of Control.

The army said Pakistani soldiers did not provide any fire cover but “without their support, the infiltration was not possible”.

The JCO killed in action was identified as Arun Kumar and injured soldier as Solanki Raju, who has been shifted to the army base hospital.

This was the second major bid this year after a May 8 attempt to sneak across militants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
