IG (law and order) RK Vishwakarma, who was also present during the briefing, said, “I will let you know after talking to the Sonbhadra superintendent of police.” But, before Vishwakarma could collect details on the query, Upadhyay showed off his philsophical bent of mind and made the alleged comment.
He told reporters that he had a firm belief in the teachings of Gautam Buddha and told them a story. “After renouncing his kingdom, Buddha was trying to find the reasons of death. First, he reached the conclusion that a person died due to disease. Later, Buddha said that old age was the reason of death. Finally, Buddha reached conclusion that birth was the reason of death. If you are born then one day you have to die”, he said.
One of the channels flashed his statement which evoked a lot of controversy in the power circles and in view of his insensitive comment, the state government striped him of his post, a spokesman said.
Talking to HT, Upadhyay said that he was innocent. “My comment was carried out of proportion by the electronic channel. I am shocked the way the channel distorted my comment and flashed it with the killing in Ghaziabad. I am repenting over my comment and in future I would be conscious while speaking to the media,” he said.
