A twelve-year old girl was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by two unidentified persons, who later tried to burn her alive at Manish Nagpur area in south Nagpur on Thursday night.

The girl, who sustained over 90 % burns, is now struggling for her life at a local government run medical college and hospital.

According to Sonegaon police, the victim Sangita (name changed) was missing from her Jaidurga Nagar slum on Thursday evening. When her parents could not locate her till 10 on Thursday night, they lodged a complaint with the local police.

It was suspected that the victim was lured in under the pretense of a relationship. The accused took her to a construction site at Manish Nagar at night, where another person joined them and raped her repeatedly. They later doused her with liquor and set her blaze fearing a police complaint.

The incident came to light after the girl was spotted by one Madhukar Ukey, a passerby this morning near a construction site. He immediately informed the police and rushed her to the government medical college and hospital.

Talking to HT, Vishnu Bhoyee, the investigation officer of Sonegaon police station said that it was confirmed that the girl was raped by at least two persons. “However, she could not name the rapists. We are unable to interrogate the victim in details as her state is extremely grave,” he pointed out.

The police have recovered a couple of liquor bottles, blue film CDs and cigarette packets from the spot.

A medical test confirmed rape and a case of rape and attempt to murder has been registered against unknown rapists. “No one was arrested in this regard so far,” Bhoyee further said.
