President of the district Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Praveen Bansal on Saturday said the FIR against Renu Sharma, councillor from ward number 29, and her husband Rajesh Sharma in connection with forging documents was a "conspiracy hatched jointly by police and her opponents." Holding a press conference here, Bansal said: "Cops' involvement into the case was uncalled for, as the matter was needed to be investigated by the Election Commission."

Following an inquiry that lasted for six months, the Division Number 8 police registered an FIR against Renu Sharma on June 10 for allegedly forging documents that were submitted to the municipal corporation for contesting the elections in June last.

The inquiry was marked by the Division Number 8 police following Charanjit Singh Gill, a city resident, filed an RTI to know about the documents that were submitted by the councillor to contest the election.

Bansal said that Sharma was not indulged in any fraud and the FIR should have not been registered against her.

Bansal also met the Ludhiana police commissioner on Saturday, urging him to mark an inquiry into the case so that the truth could be unearthed
