Villagers are stranded on an isolated island on the banks.
As a group of villagers who cultivate musk melons and water melons on the island went for harvesting, the river got flooded as 4.7 cusecs of water began to flow in it on Sunday morning.
Makrand K Pandurang, deputy commissioner, told HT on the phone on Sunday evening that the administration was in touch with the stranded villagers.
He said all villagers were safe and they had been apprised of the rescue operation."Keeping in view of the sensitivity, IAF choppers at Sarsawa (Saharanpur), Hindon (Ghaziabad) and Bathinda (Punjab) are ready to conduct the rescue operation at night. The army at Ambala cantonment has also been alerted. Teams are fully geared up and waiting for a clear sky to launch the operation," the DC said.
Following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Uttrakhand and adjoining areas for the past couple of days, the water level in the Yamuna has increased significantly.
As per official information, 3.4 lakh cusecs were flowing in the Yamuna over the Hathni Kund barrage located on the Haryana-UP border in the district in the evening.
Meanwhile, the financial commissioner, revenue and disaster management, Krishna Mohan said a company of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) comprising 50 personnel had been called in from Ghaziabad for the rescue operation.
