Reacting sharply to the latest increase in petrol price, the Samajwadi Party (SP) said the Congress was controlled by capitalists and not bothered about the common man. In a statement, Samajwadi Party state spokesperson and jail minister Rajendra Chowdhary said price rise and the Congress were synonymous. “This is the fifth occasion since January when the petrol price has been hiked. Ever since the UPA came to power, people have been suffering due to price rise and corruption,” he said.

Chowdhary said though the government announced Rs. 2 increase in petrol price on Saturday, the hike was even more if local sales tax and VAT were added to it. “One should not be surprised if the oil companies jacked up prices of diesel, kerosene oil and cooking gas. The petrol price hike would now escalate the cost of transportation and lead to a further rise in prices of commodities,” he added.
