The local police claimed to have busted a gang of notorious criminals and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession. Senior superintendent of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said acting on a tip-off, the police raided the residence of one Surjit Singh and recovered a .12 pistol and .315 rifle along with 50 cartridges besides an air gun from there.

Those arrested have been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Gurwinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Ram Singh, all residents of Dirba in Sangrur district, and Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Maur Mandi in Bathinda district.

Sidhu said during the interrogation the accused confessed that they had taken shelter at Surjit's house, who had called them to take possession of his land. Sidhu said the accused identified their accomplices as Mohammad Waseem, Gahiya and Mohammad Iftikhyar, who were involved in a firing incident at civil hospital, Malerkotla, on June 14.

“The raids are being conducted to nab the above-said three accused,” said the SSP.
Sidhu added that two of the accused -- Sukhwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh - had already been declared proclaimed offenders by the Dirba police.

The police said several cases have already been registered against all accused at different police stations.
