He’s a man who’s juggled many roles — from TV presenter to disc jockey and music festival co-founder — quite successfully. Nikhil Chinapa’s venture, Submerge Music, has also brought many international acts such as Swedish House Mafia, Alesso, Deniz Koyu, Armin van Buuren and Tiësto to India. Now,
the musician is expanding his repertoire by releasing his debut album, Defected In The House India 2013, which is a two-disc compilation of house music.Tell us more about the album.
It’s a mix for (UK-based label) Defected Records, one of the most influential record labels in house music history. It’s a compilation of tracks created by some of my favourite dance music producers. I’ve mixed and arranged them. While one of the discs features a lot of deep house and nu-disco, the second one has tracks that move into more classic and timeless house territory. Why did you choose house music?
I don’t know if I chose house music or it chose me. Nothing is more fulfilling for me than playing beautiful and rhythmic music for a group of people, and watching them connect to it and to each other. The compilation is a way of capturing that feeling.Tell us about the collaborations in the album.
The tracks I’ve selected come from some of the most popular producers in the world, including Riva Starr, Nhan Solo, Alex Niggemann, Pleasurekraft, Dennis Ferrer, Pete Tong, the Shapeshifters, and many more. Why did you wait for so long to come up with your first album?
I think it’s better late than never. I wear a lot of different hats in my various careers and roles. When Defected (Records) approached me, I needed the time to sit down and work on this compilation that included finding the right tracks, obtaining the rights from various producers and record labels, and eventually mixing them all together. The entire process took about five months from the conception to release. What are the other projects that you are working on?
We’ve got quite a few upcoming tours planned with popular DJs and some underground artistes. We're also working on a couple of properties which would be the first of their kind in India.
