The possible return of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to the Congress  fold appeared to gain momentum on Wednesday with DMK leader TR Baalu meeting Sonia Gandhi to request support for Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi. This is the perhaps the first meeting between a senior DMK leader and Gandhi after DMK withdrew support to the UPA on the issue of the Sri Lankan Tamils.

The Congress  is yet to decide on the issue after indicating  that both parties should try to reach an understanding as both the parties do not have enough MLAs to elect a Rajya Sabha member.

With CM Jayalalithaa agreeing to favour CPI’s D Raja, he is likely to sail through with the required 34 votes.

After Karunanidhi fielded his daughter ,Vijayakanth fielded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) treasurer AR Elangovan as its candidate, making the fight inevitable for the sixth seat.
