His jacket ‘compliments’ the sultry weather. He, however, calls it a special ‘cover design’, designed by his friend to protect him from heat.
In Chandigarh to perform for the first time, at Blue Blazer in Sector 26, Nikhil Chinapa is what we call a true music fanatic; so much so, that
he married a DJ!
On a serious note, Nikhil, once known for hosting music shows on MTV — and touted to be the last VJ of a music show on the channel — is now the festival director of Sunburn music fest, Goa, besides of course being one of the founding directors of Submerge Music.
The 40-year-old, however, does not believe in promoting his company. “Our company gets famous DJs such as Tiesto and SHM to India. So, we don’t feel the need for promotion.”
Started ‘accidentally’ almost a decade ago by a bunch of friends, Submerge Music has received a five-star rating by Mark Wat — production engineer of Fat Boy Slim.
About the success of his company, Nikhil says, “I never thought about starting a company. I’ve always loved to make people groove to my tunes, so, my friends and I started arranging occasional events, which snowballed into this company.”
What makes Nikhil have an edge over the others is the fact that he can make you sway on tunes that are not on your iPod. “The idea is to make people spin to music that they have never heard before; that’s what a DJ’s job is,” says he.
About playing in Chandigarh (on Saturday) for the first time, he says, “We have discovered that the crowd in non-metro cities is better in touch with the clubbing culture. It is time that the administration of every city understands the economic impact of music shows. Some people still have the misconception that music shows are all about drinking and creating ruckus.”
Saying that the consumption pattern of music has changed drastically over the years, especially since the introduction of YouTube, on a happy note Nikhil adds, “India is now a part of the global music industry.”
