A year on, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) has failed to keep its promise to install a pump set in Sector 31. The shopkeepers of the bustling market in the area have expressed concern as there is no proper drainage of water leading to waterlogging.
Heavy rains last week had
left the place inundated in knee-deep water, affecting the business besides leaving the area with foul smell.
“Huda officials have failed to deliver what they had assured. They had said that a permanent pump set will be installed in the market area. However, nothing has happened yet and we fear the monsoon,” said MC Yadav, general secretary, Market Welfare Association, Sector 31.
In a meeting with the residents and officials on Saturday, the estate officer-II, Huda had discussed the civic issues and sought status reports as soon as possible.
The estate officer, Narendra Yadav, had asked about the status of water supply, sewage system and storm water drains in the sector. Other issues that were discussed included the condition of parks, number of temporary and permanent encroachments and the problems related to the market.
Sector 31 was the worst-hit area due to rains last week. The shops had remained closed till evening as customers preferred other markets. “This happens in every monsoon for the past 22 years. Every year, the market is flooded for the entire month. Huda makes false promises of improving the situation which is never fulfilled,” said MC Yadav.
The Huda office was also flooded during last week’s rains and the bills were collected by officials sitting outside an adjoining shop. Basements of all the shops had over four feet water, causing damages worth lakhs to the shopkeepers.
When questioned, Huda sub-divisional officer Subhash Piplani said that two portable motors with generator sets were rented from Delhi to pump out water and release it in the green belt. However, residents complained that these are temporary arrangements that fall flat every monsoon.
