The latest edition was the final chapter for the tournament, signed off by India.
However, Dalmiya, who is holding charge as interim president of the BCCI, is looking to ensure it is not curtains for the tournament. Sources close to him told the Hindustan Times that he will press for the event to continue at the ICC annual conference starting at Lord’s today.
“The event is close to his heart, he will never want it to be scrapped from the Future Tours Programme. He will in all probability raise it in the ICC board of directors’ meeting,” said an insider.
Former players too have called for the tournament, now a compact affair involving only the eight top-ranked teams, to be continued. Former England captain David Gower has asked ICC to scrap plans to replace the Champions Trophy with the World Test Championship.
