A 10-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped twice in the last month, died on Tuesday evening—about a week after the second assault on June 16. The police have detained four minors, between the ages of 14 to 16, for the alleged sexual assault.
However, doctors are yet to ascertain the
cause of her death.
The girl was first admitted to an NMMC hospital on June 20 after she started vomiting and was running a fever and a cold.
“On examining her, doctors found that her genitals were bleeding and her hymen was ruptured,” said Suresh Bhosale, senior police inspector, Turbhe.
Bhosale said that the girl’s mother—who at the time was unaware that the girl had been raped—said the girl had slipped while filling water, causing the bleeding.
The same day, the girl was shifted to DY Patil hospital.
“When the girl was sent to us by the NMMC hospital for further diagnosis and an MRI, she was unconscious and needed a ventilator,” said Dr Shyam Mhatre, deputy superintendent of DY Patil hospital, adding that the girl also had a viral infection that could have caused meningitis. She also had symptoms of tuberculosis.
It was only on Monday that the doctors learnt about the rape. “There were no external injuries or signs of rape since several days had passed since the incident,” said Mhatre.
Mhatre said that the actual cause of the girl’s death would be confirmed after the post mortem report is received adding that the MRI report had shown an infarction in the right brain, which is a sort of brain stroke.
It was only on Monday that the victim’s friends told her mother that she had been raped.
“My daughter has confided in her friend about being raped Three of the accused boys had lured her to a hill near her house by promising to pay her Rs10 and had then raped her,” said the victim’s mother.
The fourth minor who has been detained is accused of having raped her a month ago.
“Since the three boys are minors they cannot be arrested and will be treated under the Juvenile Act,” said Bhosale.
The police have currently booked a case of rape. “However now that the girl has died, we will make changes accordingly,” said Bhosale.
