Gupta scripted his own suicide drama in order to pressurize them into making payments. He informed his brother Sachin Gupta on Wednesday morning through an SMS that he was going to jump into the Agra Canal flowing through Faridabad close to the BPTP bridge. He also claimed that he had left a suicide note.
Soon after receiving this disturbing information, his brother and other relatives rushed to the spot and found his car abandoned near the bank of the canal. This confirmed their suspicions that he had indeed jumped into the canal. Within minutes, local residents and police personnel rushed to the spot. Fire tenders were kept stationed at bank of the canal.
A massive search operation was launched for Gupta but it did not yield any results. Meanwhile, Gupta informed his friend Rajinder Chawla over the phone in the afternoon that he was in Noida. Chawla shared this information with Gupta's relatives and the police were subsequently informed. The police immediately put his phone under surveillance.
The cops later found that Gupta was not in Noida but somewhere near Haridwar in Uttarakhand. It was only after confirming his location that the cops stopped the search operation in the canal. The central police, which is yet to solve the murder mystery of a domestic help in Sector 15 area on Tuesday, was kept busy for half a day looking for the iron trader.
"This man called his friend informing him that he was in Noida and had not jumped into the canal," DCP Central Devender Yadav said, adding, "we are contemplating action against this man for taking the administration for a ride."
