Kamduni residents are feeling let down as the chief minister has failed to keep her promise that the police would file a charge sheet against Ansar Ali, the main accused in the rape and murder of a 20-year-old college girl on June 7. Ali was arrested on June 8 and Mamata had repeatedly promised before the media and at different public meetings that police would file a charge sheet within 15 days of the arrest. But the deadline expired on June 22 and Ali was sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

With police failing to file a charge sheet within the promised time, Kamduni villagers are apprehensive whether Mamata could even fulfil her hope of sending Ai to the gallows within one month. The fears are not unfounded though as they stem from the fact that Mamata labelled two women who dared to question her as CPI(M) supporters and then Maoists.

Adding salt to the wound, the government show-caused Pradip Mukherjee, the principal of the school where the victim studied, for leading his students to a protest rally.
