The police have arrested two autorickshaw drivers in connection with the alleged abduction and gangrape of a medical student in Manipal on June 20. The police on Thursday named the arrested suspects as Yogish and Harish and said a third suspect, Anand (also a part-time auto driver), had fled to Goa.

Yogish and Harish are from villages near Udipi, the temple town less than 5 km away from Manipal, a major educational centre in western Karnataka.

According to a police official, Yogish tried to commit suicide by consuming poison when he was cornered. He was admitted to Manipal hospital.

Pratap Reddy, inspector general of police (western range), and Udupi superintendent of police BS Boralingaiah have questioned him at the hospital, the official who did not want to be named added.

The 22-year-old final year MBBS student from Kerala was abducted last Thursday by three persons in an autorickshaw from the Manipal University campus when she was returning to her room from the library around 11.30pm.

After sexually assaulting her in a remote place, the suspects dumped her near her room, which she shares with friends. She is recuperating at Manipal hospital.
