An FIR was lodged against former member of Parliament and CPI(M) district secretary Sujan Chakraborty in connection with the murder of Shibram Naskar, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Baruipur panchayat samiti, late on Wednesday night. Chakraborty, however, claims he is
The FIR, which was lodged by the deceased’s brother, names five persons, including Chakraborty. They are prime accused Kanu Sapui, Chakraborty, Raju Naskar, Bimal Naskar and Jukta Mondal. Sapui is a TMC supporter while the others have links with the CPM. Police have arrested Dinbandhu Sapui, a TMC supporter, who was not named in the FIR.
Police said that Naskar was killed when he was returning home from campaigning. But Trinamool leader and Baruipur municipality chairman Shakti Roy Choudhury said that Naskar was attacked with a chopper while having tea at a local stall. “Both his (Naskar’s) assailants are criminals sheltered by the CPM,” alleged Roy Choudhury.
Local residents of Kalaburu village, where the murder took place, say a drunken brawl culminated in murder. Naskar allegedly kicked prime accused Kanu Sapui after a tiff. Both were drunk during that time. Sapui retaliated but not with enough force. Enraged, Sapui then went after Naskar with a chopper. Dinbandhu Sapui and one Arabindo were present at that time.
Chakraborty termed the case against him as part of a ‘bigger conspiracy’ hatched by the Trinamool Congress government to frame CPI-M leaders (like him) in false cases. Chakraborty said, “The allegation against me and my party is false. The Trinamool is trying to frame me. They first tried to implicate me in the Saradha case but failed. Now, they are trying again. Naskar died in a TMC inner party clash. The CPI(M) does not believe in the politics of murder.”
Chakraborty added, “Let them arrest me. There are laws.” Superintendent of police, South 24-Parganas, Pravin Tripathy, confirmed the arrest and said cases have been started against the others, including Chakraborty.
Mayor and Trinamool’s district observer Sovan Chatterjee accused Chakraborty of being involved in the murder. “Naskar was killed when he was returning after campaigning. There is a deep conspiracy behind this. The possibility of Sujan Chakraborty’s direct or indirect involvement cannot be ruled out,” said Chatterjee.
In a media meet on Thursday night, CPM state secretariat member Gautam Deb charged the Trinamool government with “carrying out a political vendetta” and alleged that police were “forced” to lodge an FIR against Chakraborty following “a phone call from Writers’ Buildings.” “This is dirty politics. If Sujan is arrested, we will hit the streets. There will be agitations in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas,” said Deb.
