Gopal Chand, station house officer of Dharamkot police station, was suspended on Wednesday night after four ballot boxes were looted from Jalalabad East village under Dharamkot constituency in this district during the counting for panchayat elections.

The ballot boxes were allegedly looted by around 25 unidentified Akali workers. Dharamkot SHO Gopal Chand, who had left the polling station before the completion of the process, has been suspended for negligence.

At around 11.30pm, when counting was on for the sarpanch seats, around 25 Akali workers barged into the counting centre of Jalalabad East and ran away with three ballot boxes, the re-polling for which was ordered by additional deputy commissioner Amit Kumar. "The polling for station number 114, ward numbers 6 and 7 will be held again on July 5," said Amit Kumar.

SSP Surjeet Singh Grewal said, "Gopal Chand was deputed there due to sensitivity of the polling station and he left the place before completion of the counting process and ballot boxes were looted following his absence."

Meanwhile, a criminal case has been registered against around 25 unidentified people for looting ballot boxes on the complaint of returning officer Veer Singh.

Congress candidate Amarjeet Singh, backed by SGPC member and Congress leader Sukhjeet Singh Kaka Lohgarh, was declared winner by a margin of 1,065 votes while Raghbir Singh, sarpanch candidate from former minister Tota Singh's group, lost the election.

Senior leader loses sarpanch's election

Faridkot: Lakhvir Singh Arianwala, a senior SAD leader, who had been the district chief of SAD and also the former chairman of the district planning board, lost the election of sarpanch from his village Arianwala to Harcharan Singh Sandhu by 58 votes. Sandhu was allegedly supported by the Congress. Arianwala was a contender for the assembly ticket from Faridkot during the last assembly elections. "It is surprising that Arianwala, a senior leader of the party, contested the election of the village sarpanch and lost," said a source.
