After deliberating upon the issue for years, the UT administration has finally notified house tax to be imposed on residential buildings.
UT municipal corporation commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh has said the property tax will be enforced from April 1, 2013. The administration has decided to impose tax at the rate of Rs. 1 per square yard for the assessment year 2013-14 except for houses having plot area less than 125 square yard, economical weaker section (EWS) or low-income group (LIG) category and in the villages falling within the limits of the municipal corporation.

The exemption shall not be available to the flats or dwelling units constructed by the cooperative house building societies and the Chandigarh Housing Board as the area of the entire land will be taken as a single unit and thereafter tax will be divided against the individual flat or dwelling units etc depending upon their respective area.

However, the government lands and buildings shall be exempted from making payment of tax so imposed, but such lands and buildings shall be liable to make payment of service charges at the rate of 0.75 paise per square yard.
