Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes' chairman Rajesh Bagha on Friday handed over a cheque for Rs. 1.87 lakh to the kin of a Dalit girl Anju Bala of Binewal who was allegedly murdered in May last.
Anju and her sister were kidnapped by three persons. Her body was recovered hanging from a tree in Singhe village of Himachal the next day.  The family had claimed that she was murdered.

The SC commission had announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the bereaved family. The first installment was handed over to the deceased's brother Balwant Singh who was accompanied by commission member Parkash Singh Garhdiwala and district officials.

Bagha said that the remaining amount too would be handed over soon.

Garhshankar police had first registered a kidnapping case only but on the directions of the SC commission, a special investigation team comprising SP (detective), CIA inspector and Tanda DSP was set up. On SIT's recommendation, a murder case was registered against three youths of Binewal, Singhe and Seehwan. They are all in judicial custody.
