Now, it will not be easy for students admitted under sports quota at Panjab University (PU) to skip playgrounds and not participate in sports competitions. An eight-member committee of PU under Dean University Instructions (DUI) Prof AK Bhandari which also comprised Director Physical Education Dr Parminder Singh, decided that a student admitted under sports quota will have to attain mandatory 75 % attendance on playground.

The student also has to get an attendance certificate from Director Sports to secure admit card for appearing in exams.
It was observed that some students use the sports quota to get admission in varsity’s courses and leave games soon after that.
With regard to 75 % attendance on the sports grounds, Directorate of Sports issues time table for all the students admitted under reserved category of sports on PU campus.

There is a compulsory sports training programme for them everyday either in morning or evening or as per the convenience of the students.

In case a student does not attend the practice session at ground due to medical reason or any other reason, he will get exemption from the field training as per PU rules.

The committee recommends in its meeting held on April 16 that condition of 75 % attendance in sports grounds which already exists in university rules, should be mandatory and for the proper implementation of this condition the ‘Attendance Certificate’ should be issued by the Directorate of Sports in favour of each student admitted under reserved sports quota and admit card should be issued by the chairperson to the concerned student “only on the production of this certificate”.

The vice chancellor Prof AK Grover has approved the changes in the rules and the issue will also be put up before syndicate on May 31 for ratification.

“The rule of 75 % attendance on playgrounds was there earlier too but now with the introduction of attendance certificate it will be implemented strictly. Many a times it was observed that students leave the sports after getting admission. Their purpose was to get admission only. It will also help in improving the sports performance of university,” said Parminder Singh, director sports.
