Popularly known as the T-20 of theatre, the Short and Sweet Festival is back this year to provide fast-track live entertainment in Delhi. Organised in association with Hindustan Times, the festival’s curtain raiser, which is being held this weekend, will see ten back-to-back plays of 10-minutes
“In today’s time, a 10-minute play is perfect to hold the attention of the audience. It is crisp and goes straight to the point without beating around the bush,” says Sohalia Kapur, executive producer of the festival.
For those who missed the performance of Dickheads (it won the Best Play and Best Director award last year) by Theatre Garage Project, here’s an opportunity to catch it again at the curtain raiser. “It is a big challenge to make people think and laugh at the same time in a 10-minute format, especially in clown theatre. Thanks to the festival, a lot more people have become aware of this relatively new theatre form,” says Ashwath Bhatt, the writer of Dickheads.
Ankit Chaddha, a 25-year -old storyteller will be sharing his Dastan-e-Mobile story. “It’s fun to sometimes compress a 60 minute story into a 10 minute tale,” says Chaddha, last year finalist.
The special focus this time is on giving opportunity to amateur theatre lovers to write, direct and act in their own plays through an array of workshops that are being held this month. “A lot of Short and Sweet participants have moved on to professional theatre, TV and films. We hope to provide them a platform to learn the craft and make their dreams come true,” says Prashant Sehgal, the festival director.
The festival also plans to introduce an evening of films on theatre and platform performances by Delhi University students during the main festival in November.
