The army on Tuesday claimed to have foiled a major infiltration bid following an encounter in north Kashmir's Keran sector around 5.30pm on Monday. Troops deployed on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran Sector of Kupwara have foiled a major attempt of infiltration, resulting into the
elimination of five terrorists, the army said.
Based on specific information from intelligence agencies regarding likelihood of terrorists attempting to infiltrate in the Keran sector of the frontline division of north Kashmir, vigilant troops detected eight to nine terrorists moving in the forest area about 500 metre on own side of the LoC.
The terrorists were immediately engaged by firing from the post located along the fence. The firing was very effective and resulted in the elimination of five terrorists, while the remaining fled towards the LoC under the cover of thick foliage.
Till the receipt of the last information, the army operations were in progress and some war-like store may be recovered from the site.
According to army spokesman Naresh Vij, a group of 8-9 militants had infiltrated the LoC and were trying to cross the fence when the encounter took place. He confirmed that most of the militants have been killed but no bodies have been recovered so far.
"The militants were trying to sneak into the Indian side when they were spotted by jawans of 4 Kumaon regiment. The group had eight to nine men. They were spotted and challenged to surrender but they started firing instead," said Vij.
The jawans retaliated and almost all the militants were killed in the ensuing encounter, he added.
Vij, however, said the bodies of the militants have not been retrieved so far. "We have not recovered any bodies as they are lying very far," he added.
Unconfirmed reports say three of the infiltrators might have crossed back to the Pakistani side of the LoC.
This is the second major infiltration bid since June 1, 2013. In an encounter on the LoC in the Nowgam sector in north Kashmir, two militants were killed and two had managed to cross back to the Pakistani side on June 1.
