People in Punjab are not getting old-age pension, shagun grant and other welfare benefits because the state government has almost bankrupted the state, senior Congress leader Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa has said. "It will cost the ruling alliance all seats in Punjab in the coming parliamentary elections," he added in a statement here on Tuesday. He referred to a Punjab Congress delegation that had met United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek an industrial package for the state on the pattern of the neighbouring hill states.

"The delegation also sought incentives for building units in the border and kandi (Himalayan sub-mountainous) areas of the state and the linking of the minimum support price (MSP) of all crop to the price index," Fateh Jung Singh said.

The delegation leader, state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, had also congratulated them on introducing National Food Security Ordinance to benefit 82-crore people, Fateh Jung Singh added.
