An alert resident helped thwart three miscreants' attempt to break into an ATM at Basti Jodhewal on early Wednesday morning. According to Tarsem, a local, he was going for a walk around 4:30 am, when he saw three persons enter a Punjab National Bank ATM and close the shutter.

Finding it strange, he asked his son to accompany him, and approached the ATM. Tarsem said as soon as the miscreants realised their presence, they came out and started walking towards Sunder Nagar.

Tarsem said when he confronted the trio, they dropped a sack and fled the spot. “I raised an alarm to seek neighbours' help to nab the miscreants, but they fled immediately, following which I called the police,” he said.

Tarsem said there was no guard at the ATM. According to the police, the accused cut the wires of the CCTV camera inside the ATM booth. Inspector Balwinder Singh of Basti Jodhewal said investigation had been initiated.
