Officials with the weather department said a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal had activated cyclonic winds and resulted in heavy cloud build-up.
“The cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal strengthened over the last 24 hours, causing westerly winds to blow heavily into north Konkan area, including Thane, Raigad and Mumbai. We expect this system to prevail over the next 48 hours,” said VK Rajeev, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), western region.
The IMD’s observatories at Colaba and Santacruz recorded 56.4mm and 23mm of rainfal respectively. Besides Dadar, it also rained heavily in Worl (91mm) and Matunga (84mm).
The heavy rainfall caused a dip in the mercury and the minimum temperature at Santacruz at 23.3 degree Celsius was the coldest at this time of the year since 2010.
