Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s what you can expect from this week’s release(s)…Film:
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Cast:
Farhan Akhtar (last seen in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara; 2012), Sonam Kapoor (last seen in
Raanjhanaa) and Divya Dutta (last seen in Lootera)Storyline:
This much-publicised biopic of sprinter Milkha Singh tells the story of the athlete’s life and struggles, culminating in the legendary athlete’s Olympic race. Director:
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Last directed Delhi 6; 2009) Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, the film followed Mehra’s hit movie, Rang De Basanti (2006). It was not half as well-received as the Aamir Khan starrer. However, the film’s music — composed by AR Rahman — was a big hit.
Most of the critics have felt that the musical trio hasn’t met their audience’s expectations with this album. However, some tracks (like Zinda and Maston ka jhund) have been appreciated.
Controversies/stunts: When news of Pakistani actor Meesha Shafi’s debut (in BMB) came about, rumours of the film being banned across the border followed too. However, they were soon deemed untrue and a controversy was averted; though not for long. A Hindu group recently objected to the lyrics of Maston ka jhund and demanded withholding the screening in Goa.
Marketing/hype: Not many production houses promote their movies like Excel Entertainment does. With the enthusiastic Milkha Singh in tow, the makers started this film’s marketing drive months ago, launching with much flair the teasers, trailers and eventually, the music of the movie. Their latest stunt involves Farhan running a four-city (Delhi, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Jaipur) mini-marathon tour reportedly.
Our assessment: This film’s is led by a director-writer, who turned singer for his acting debut (with Rock On!!; 2008), and then over the last 18 months has transformed himself into a sprinting sardar just so he could do justice to this role. The promos look good (the fact that the trailer of Delhi 6 also looked good is irrelevant here).
For the final verdict: Look out for Sarit Ray's review tomorrow
