Delhi University colleges offering Bachelor in Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) are upgrading their infrastructure to offer students hands-on experience of media technology.
Colleges have made television, radio and film production a part of the new syllabus which makes it
imperative for colleges to provide students with practical exposure and upgrading their media centres.
Offered by only six colleges under DU, BJMC has emerged as one of the new popular courses and had received over 59,000 applicants this year.
Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) is in the process of setting up a fully-equipped studio in its new wing while Delhi College of Arts and Commerce (DCAC) and Kalindi College are constructing new media centres.
“We are building a new studio equipped with latest technology, which will be ready for the upcoming academic session,” said MS Rawat, Principal, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce.
Many of these colleges are also in touch with distinguished media professionals. “We have taken inputs from a number of media personnel from different fields regarding the technological set-up and design of the studio,” said Noorul Haq, administrative officer, Kalindi College.
Meanwhile Indraprastha (IP) College for Women and Maharaja Agrasen College are in the process of upgrading their existing and functioning studios. IP College is already equipped with a studio, three radio production rooms and 13 editing bays.
The college is now building another studio, dark rooms and upgrading the equipment to meet the needs of the new syllabus.
Maharaja Agrasen College, too, has a studio, post-production lab, audio studio and professional lighting equipment for practical exposure in the area of production. But not all colleges will have their media centres ready for the upcoming academic session.
“We are planning to build a studio. We are waiting for the university’s grant. Till then, we will outsource the necessary equipment and provide it to the students,” said Geetesh Nirban, media coordinator, Kamala Nehru College.
