"Zargar was on leave. He had gone to the forest with his wife to collect firewood. The duo were intercepted by some unknown militants in the forest," said a police spokesman. Zargar was posted at the CID headquarters Srinagar.
Police said the policeman was killed by the militants in a gruesome manner. Independent reports suggest Zargar's body was found with his throat slit.
"The police has reached the spot and the area has been cordoned off. The body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives for last rites," read the police statement.
Handwara Police has started the investigation in this regard. The deceased policeman is survived by his wife and four children, including a daughter.
