High fat diet among city women may prove hazardous to the health of their bones if a new research by a Punjab Agricultural University scholar is to go by. The research tested 200 women in city for osteoporosis, a disease characterised by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue that leads to bone fragility, and found that an alarming number of women in city are falling prey to the disease.

As many as 113 women, that makes for 67.5% of the sample, tested positive for osteopenia, the preliminary stage of the disease.A total of 21 were confirmed for osteoporosis that makes them easily susceptible to fractures of hip, spine and wrist.

The women tested belonged to the age group of 35 to 59 years.Interestingly, the research, that studied the relationship between nutrition and the disease, noted that high fat diet may be a principal factor contributing to the phenomenon.

"Generous and uninhibited consumption of fatty foods such as those fried and smothered in butter and oil were found to be common in the diet of women suffering from the disease," said Dipti Chowdhary, who carried out the research and is pursuing her PhD from Food and Nutrition Department, PAU.

Her research further notes that in the women who showed no sign of osteoporosis, the diet was rich in milk and milk products, Zinc, Vitamin A and fibre, elements that she says contribute in the strengthening of the bones.

"Besides high fat diet, a lack of physical activity too was found to be a factor," added research advisor Dr JK Sangha.The research tested the disease in the women based on Bone Mineral Density (BMD).


What is BMD?
A bone mineral density test measures the density of minerals (such as calcium) in your bones using a special X-ray or computed tomography CT scan. This information is used to estimate the strength of your bones.

Tips for Preventing Osteoporosis
1.Keep active and exercise your entire body: Walking is not sufficient; it targets the feet, ankles and legs, not your hips, spine, shoulders and wrists.
2.Get good nutrition: For example, in place of soda pop, drink fruit juice, vegetable juice, milk, and/or calcium- fortified soy milk. Instead of doughnuts and packaged cookies, eat frozen yogurt, fruit desserts, low-fat ice cream, muffins made at home or at a bakery, etc.
3.Take vitamin and mineral supplements: If you're not getting enough calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and other bone nutrients from your diet.
4.Avoid smoking and excessive drinking: They impair calcium absorption and inhibit the growth of bone-building cells.
5.Consider adding soy foods to your diet: They contain plant estrogens, which may help reduce bone loss. If you eat too much soy food or take a lot of soy supplements, this could suppress your thyroid function and result in thyroid disease.
