Firebrand Kashmir legislator Engineer Rashid lived up to his image again on Monday. The independent MLA broke locks of two government ration depots and allowed villagers to take the grains.

Apparently picking a leaf from a Bollywood flick, around 10:30am, Rashid, an MLA from north Kashmir frontier constituency of Langate, reached two consumer affairs and public distribution stores of Pothwara and Reshwari villages and unlocked them. The MLA broke the locks of the depots in front of the Panchayat members and distributed food grains among the villagers as per the sanctioned ration. The villagers claim they have been without grains for the past three weeks.

“Three cabinet ministers hail from Kupwara district (where these villages are located) and often make useless visits to their constituencies for petty vote bank politics. I made the move today because I will not allow these white collar VIPs including ‘mantries’ and ‘babus’ to suck the blood of those whom they rule,” said Rashid, who recently launched a party Awami Ittehad Party.

The MLA claimed he had brought the matter into the notice of the minister concerned and higher authorities. “But they couldn’t resolve the problem of inhabitants of this remote area,” he said.

The depots had received fresh stocks a few days ago. “However, the department was not distributing the same due to some unknown reasons, making the villagers to suffer,” he said.

Rashid is known for his histrionics. From raising clemency issue of the Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru before the state assembly to unleashing dogs at the state secretariat and beating drums outside a contractor’s house for failing to meet a deadline, the 42-year-old legislator’s popularity graph is going up.
