Alleging doctors' negligence in the death of a newborn, several residents of Sherpur village protested at the community health centre in Mullana village near here on Monday. Protesters alleged that Salma, 25, was in labour when she was admitted to the centre on Sunday evening. Following the protest and a complaint, Ambala chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Vinod Gupta has ordered an inquiry, which will be conducted by deputy CMO Dr Neelam Dogra.

The protesters have alleged that Dr Jitender and Dr Kiran, who were on duty when Salma was wheeled into the centre by husband Anil Khan, were not present at the CHC. Salma admitted by the nursing staff.

A relative, Nafees, claimed that the nursing staff informed both the doctors over the phone about the admission, but none came for over two hours. He said that in the meantime, Salma started to experience severe labour pains and the nurse on duty helped in the delivery.

He alleged that the girl child who was born through normal delivery died soon after the birth, adding that had a doctor reached the centre in time, the child could have been saved. The couple had been visiting the centre for check-ups regularly. The CMO said that action will be taken once the inquiry report is submitted.
