DSGMC has decided to construct a memorial to honour those who were killed in 1984 Anti-Sikh riots. The filed plea is also seeking suspension of all construction activities concerning the memorial which include laying the foundation stone during the pendency of the petition. It has also sought directions to government and others to abide by legal obligations to ensure there is no breach of law by raising illegal structure inside the Gurdwara campus and to furnish records concerning permission granted to construct such a memorial.
The petition also said there was no tradition in Sikh religion to build memorials in gurdwaras, built to commemorate the martyrdom of gurus, and Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib was chosen as the site for the memorial commemorated the martyrdom of ninth Sikh guru, Guru Teg Bahadur.
It also said the president of DSGMC is "seeking to politicise a place of religious worship." Anti-Sikh riots had broken out in various places of the city after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
