The Delhi Police have seized 99 country-made pistols and 198 magazines meant to be supplied to various criminal gangs active in and around the national Capital, police said on Wednesday.
Special cell officers claimed it was one of the biggest arms hauls in Delhi. Two men, identified as
Niranjan Mishra and Mohammad Firoz Alam, were arrested with the weapons concealed in a cavity behind headlights of an Ambassador car.
The duo was held from Shastri Park area in east Delhi on Tuesday evening.
“We had received a tip-off that a huge consignment of illegal weapons was up for supply to its buyers. We were told that the weapons were concealed in an Ambassador car. We laid a trap and intercepted the car with Mishra and Alam in it,” said MM Oberoi, joint commissioner of police (special cell).
“Initially, they tried to dodge the police but failed. Later, on the persistent questioning by police officers, they took out the weapons hidden in a cavity created behind the headlights of the car,” said Oberoi.
The special cell claimed the cache of arms was manufactured in Bihar’s Munger district, which is notorious for the production and sale of illegal arms. The arrested men hail from the same district.
The consignment, according to the police, was meant to be delivered in batches in Meerut and Delhi.
Due to heavy rain, the suppliers failed to reach Meerut on time and the consignment could not be delivered.
Then, they decided to deliver the other consignment at Sonia Vihar.
“During initial interrogation, the duo told the police that they had supplied a consignment of 80-85 pistols to one Haaji alias Mullaji in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, in the last week of May,” said joint CP Oberoi.
Efforts are on to nab Haaji and trace the source of the seized weapons as the arrested duo were just couriers, the police said.Earlier, the police had recovered Munger-made illegal weapons from five persons arrested in connection with the Pune blasts.
When asked why terrorists would choose a country-made weapon over a sophisticated one, an officer said: “Pistols manufactured in Munger work equally well.”
