The activists highlighted recent cases, including the rape and murder of a four-year old in Gomti Nagar before the governor.
Among other cases mentioned in the memorandum were the brutal incident in Pratapgarh where the family of a rape-accused chopped off the victim’s tongue, the gangrape of a teenage tutor in Etawah and the case of Bijnor.
The demands put forward in the memorandum included strict implementation of laws concerning women and recommendations of the justice Verma committee.
Questioning the behaviour of cops towards victims and women activists, they demanded that police be more sensitive to women’s issues, failing which strict action must be taken against them. The women’s organisations represented in the protest included All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Bharatiya Mahila Federation, AALI, Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan and Humsafar.
