Barely two-and-ahalf months after a group of Trinamool Congress workers allegedly attacked the Presidency University, it was the turn of Rabindra Bharati University (BT Road campus) to face TMC terror on Monday.
Apart from carrying party flags and lathis, the hooligans this time were also
The clash left over 15 students, varsity staff and three policemen injured.
One student has also been abducted.
Till evening, cops arrested two persons in connection with the incident.
The miscreants, led by Aliur Mondol, Ashiqur Rahaman and Dhiman Sil, had also attacked the varsity campus in a similar fashion in June 2012 and ransacked the room of then vicechancellor Chinmoy Guha.
“What can we do? The law and order situation and the socio-political scenario in the state are bound to have some impact on the university campus. After last year’s incident, security on the campus was beefed up. What more can we do?” asked Professor Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, vicechancellor of RBU.
“At 12 noon, over 25 people overpowered the security guards at the main gate and forced their way into the campus. I saw them carrying Trinamool flags and lathis and later I was told that they were carrying firearms too. Many of them were former students of this university,” said the V-C while recounting the incident.
“I immediately informed the police and called up education minister Bratya Basu and secretary of the department, Vivek Kumar. They asked me to take stern action keeping the best interests of the university in mind,” he added.
After the 2012 incident, RBU has a permanent police outpost on campus.
But not many cops were present on Monday as many were away on election duty.
After being informed by the varsity vice-chancellor, the deputy commissioner (north), Gaurav Sharma, rushed to the spot with more policemen. RBU has 52 security guards and out of them 36 are deployed on the BT Road campus.
The hooligans forced their way into the campus and went all the way to security officer Ritwik Banerjee’s room in the main building.
“They just said that the university is involved in a lot of malpractices and rushed out,” said Banerjee.
They then went to the vicechancellor’s room. “I was conducting a planning board meeting when they barged inside the room. I asked them to step outside and wait. They then went towards the students’ union room and a fight broke out with our students. We have CCTV footage of all of them and would hand them over to the police,” said Basu Ray Chaudhury.
“I am told that this group also barged into Abinindronath Hostel of the university at Baranagar and abducted an undergraduate student, Simion Souren. We are yet to find out his whereabouts and have informed the police,” he added.
This same group had attacked the university last year demanding that the online admission process be stopped.
The university then was of the opinion that this group was involved in admitting students in exchange for money which they could not do because of the online admission system starting in 2012.
This year, however, the online admission process in undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes is already over.
