US auto major General Motors has fired some employees for violating company policy in relation to the recall of 1.14 lakh units of its multi-purpose vehicle Chevrolet Tavera in India.
On Wednesday, the company's arm General Motors India had announced that it was recalling
Chevrolet Tavera manufactured between 2005 and 2013 to address emissions and specification issues, in one of the largest vehicle recalls in India.
While a General Motors India spokesperson declined to comment saying the company doesn't comment on its internal matters, reports said some employees have been dismissed following an internal investigation for "violations of company policy".
However, the number of total employees sacked by the company could not be ascertained as e-mail sent to General Motors remained unanswered.
While announcing the recall General Motors India (GMI) had said it has informed the Indian government authorities of an emission issue involving the Tavera BSIII and an issue with the Tavera BSIV not meeting certain specifications.
The recall included Chevrolet Tavera BS3 (2.5L variant) and BS4 (2.0L variant) from model years 2005-2013 to address emissions and specification issues.
Already the Road Ministry has formed a panel to probe into the recall for violation of emission norms and it will decide if any penal action would be taken against the company.
Nitin Gokarn, CEO, National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) has been asked to head the committee.
GMI had stopped production and sale of the Tavera BSIII on June 4 and the Tavera BSIV on July 2.
Last month, the firm had announced it was temporarily suspending production of Tavera and the diesel variants of both the hatchback and sedan versions of Sail model, citing quality control issues.
The company had said it was still investigating in the case of the Sail model to ascertain how many units have been affected and it is understood that there could be recall of the model.
It had said it would resume production of the diesel variants of Sail hatchback and sedan by the end of this month, while that of Tavera BS III by the end of August.
