The local branch of All-India Federation of Military Veterans' Organisation organised a function to mark Kargil Diwas at Major Sandeep Sankhla Memorial in Sector 2 on Sunday. Retired servicemen spoke about the significance of the armed forces, and the sacrifice of the martyrs, who had laid down their lives to protect the country. Later, war veterans and others paid tributes during a wreath-laying ceremony.

Association president Brig Kiran Krishan (retd) said, "We gather here every year to pay tribute to those who served the country. We want both government and civilians to treat us with respect. Also, the government needs to be more concerned about the fate of the soldiers after they leave the army."

While newly-elected mayor Upinder Walia and deputy commissioner SS Phulia, who had sent a tehsildar as his representative, were conspicuous by their absence, the function was attended by councillor Lily Bawa, member of legislative assembly (MLA) DK Bansal, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Ashwin Shenvi, Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi (retd)and Lt Gen Harcharan Singh (retd).
