She was subjected to obscene gestures, groped, pinned to the floor, assaulted, almost flung off a running train, but the 23-year-old nurse still remains courageous.
Having put up a tough fight, the victim said that she was “shocked” after the incident as she had been travelling as early
as 4.30am in local trains for the past five years, but had never encountered such an incident.
She is committed to bring the accused to justice, she said.
“When he was subjecting me to that torture, I was struggling to escape his clutches. I had lost all energy and almost fell unconscious. But I gathered the little force I had and yelled. My own voice encouraged me and I started shouting as loudly as I could. I knew people would get him. And they did,” she said.
A resident of Nalasopara, the victim had shifted to her Mahalaxmi residence only on July 5 this year.
Ten days later, she started working as a nurse with a Mahim-based hospital.
The victim said that she has been travelling in local trains, as early as 4.30am since she was 18, but had never faced such a situation.
On the presence of police officers in the compartment she said, “I have been travelling from Mahalaxmi to Mahim every day early in the morning for two weeks now. Not once have I found a constable guard the ladies compartments. But I thought there was no need to be afraid,” she said.
The victim said although she was extremely traumatised after the incident, she is not going to let it affect her life.
She said she has already moved on and was keen to bring the accused to justice.
“Why should I suffer because of some evil man’s deed? I will continue travelling by trains. If women get discouraged by such incidents, our society will get infested with such disgraceful men. I am not willing to do that,” she added.
“The police have told me that he is a perpetual offender and has many cases against him.
I am glad that I am the reason he is behind bars right now. Better measures need to be taken by the police to ensure women’s safety,” she said.
