The problem of traffic bottlenecks at the toll plazas on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway not only affects business, but supposedly also puts a dent on the image of Gurgaon as a profitable business destination.
“When global clients, after landing at the international airport, get stuck at the toll plaza congestion, they question the city’s infrastructure and doubt if businesses can be sustained here at all,” said Vinod Sood, managing director of IT firm Hughes Systique Corporation.

“If this impression is to be changed, either the toll plazas should be managed effectively or they should be removed from the city limits,” said Sood, whose company has engaged 30 cabs to ferry its 350 employees.

Senior executives working at offices in Gurgaon recount how several important meetings had to be deferred in the past as one or more stakeholders got stuck at the toll plazas.

“It leads to a very embarrassing situation when you get stuck in the toll traffic and report late for a meeting. It would have been fine if it happened once in a while, but it happens on a daily basis,” said a senior vice-president of a multinational firm.

“While on one hand, Gurgaon is decked with plush office buildings, the horrible traffic situation here puts the image of the city — which is home to nearly 250 Fortune500 companies — in a bad light. The clients question the city’s infrastructure and are often hesitant before investing further,” he added.

On an average, the company cabs’ waiting time is 7-10 minutes during non-peak hours which goes up to more than 30-40 minutes in rush hours.
