After sub-divisional magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal, Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate Ravikant Singh may face action over demolition of a mosque’s boundary wall at Kadalpur village, according to a senior government official.
"His report over the boundary wall
demolition has turned out to be a major embarrassment for the government," said the official who did not want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The DM’s report stated villagers voluntarily brought down the wall and there was no tension in the area. This contradicted the report of the local intelligence unit (LIU) that said a team led by Nagpal brought the wall down.
Incidentally, SP leader Narendra Bhati, the man who claims to have got Nagpal suspended in 41 minutes, wants the DM punished for defending her.
"I have come to know that DM in his report claimed Nagpal did not demolish any religious building wall, which is untrue and not based on facts," Bhati, chairperson of the UP State Agro Industrial Corporation Limited, had told HT on Thursday.
Justifying the suspension of the SDM, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has told mediapersons to go through the LIU report before reaching any conclusion.
Urban development minister Azam Khan has demanded the DM’s suspension for misguiding the state government. Party MP Naresh Agarwal too is in favour of suspending the DM.
Muslim clerics including Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali and Arsha Madani too have joined the chorus demanding action against the DM. Khalid alleged Nagpal had gone to Kadalpur village to pull down the wall of the mosque on the DM’s direction.
On Friday, Nagpal met chief secretary Javed Usmani to clarify her role in the demolition of the boundary wall. Sources said Nagpal told the chief secretary she went to Kadalpur on the direction of the DM.
In a letter to the chief secretary, Nagpal said she did not order demolition of the wall and was merely trying to implement the Supreme Court order that no illegal structure should come up on government land.
An appointment department officer said action against Singh would have been initiated immediately after Nagpal was suspended, but under attack for suspending her, the state government did not want to court controversy just yet.
