A youth trying to save his two sisters from rape was shot dead in a village of West Bengal on Sunday. The brazen killing brought back memories of February 2011, when a teenager was killed under similar circumstances in Barasat. In a state reeling under crimes against women, it was yet another chilling reminder that there was no safety for women — and men — even at home.

The four armed assailants had barged into the house of 22-year-old Ganesh Murmu, in Nasipur village, around 3.30 am. The girls woke to the horror of the masked men trying to strip them. When Murmu came to their aid, he was shot.

“Initial investigations have not found any enmity between Murmu and his neighbours,” said SMH Meerza, superintendent of police.

“If government fails to punish him (accused Kundan Malik), I will burn him to death. So far, we have received no help from the government,” said the girls’ father. The accused had finally been arrested on Saturday.
